Wonderfully Romantic Wildflower Center Wedding

Towne and John truly had one of the most dreamily romantic weddings I have ever been invited to photograph.

They met while John was still at West Point and Towne was a senior at UNC-Chapel Hill. After he graduated in 2000, he was stationed at Ft. Hood and deployed to Iraq from 2003-2004 (13 months). They were engaged in February ‘03, one month before he left.   John, a platoon leader, was honored with a Bronze Star and a valorous distinction award for his leadership and clarity during an attack.  Towne planned the entire wedding herself while holding a full time job at a very busy ad agency.  One month after he returned from duty, they were married in this lovely ceremony at The Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center.  And then shortly afterward they moved to the east coast so John could continue his education at MIT.  They are now the proud parents of three little dumplings.  Towne and I finished the album design in late October and her new baby girl was born a few days later.

This is the note I received from her this week after she received the album:

‘And, drum roll….the album is HERE!!!! I just opened the box, which was sealed like Fort Knox, and the album was beautifully packaged. It looks AMAZING, Sarah. Truly, there are no words to express how happy I am. You did an amazing job and spent so much time working with me to make sure it was exactly what I wanted. I really can’t thank you enough. Now I need to wrap it and tuck it under the tree for Johnny! He is going to be completely shocked that I finally completed it, as he has been teasing me for years! Thank you, thank you, thank you!”

What a day brightener!  Thank you, Towne for being as gorgeous inside as you are outside.

Jonathan and Jennifer’s Wedding Album

Its been album city over here in SBH photography land. Jonathan and Jennifer’s wedding took place in the South Street Seaport area of New York City. Before Wall Street was occupied, thank goodness! I babysat Jonathan when he was three years old, so I was really happy when he called to say that he and Jen had decided to marry and that he wanted me to photograph his wedding. I lived in New York City for a few years after college and before I knew I was a photographer. It was a treat to go back to the city and see it with fresh eyes. And those “Sex and The City’ shots on the cobblestones were so much fun!!

Special thanks to Corey Hayes for his superb second shooting skills!

Dress: Reem Acra
Bridesmaids’ dresses: Vera Wang
Catering and cake: Bridgewaters
Flowers: Atlas Floral Decorators
Suits: The guys wore their own. Jonathan’s was Hugo Boss.

Late summer breakfast with the Light family – part 1

I love it when a family calls me to do a ‘portrait’ session and they really mean ‘a day in the life’ session!

Can you guess what kind of pancakes we ate?

Deb and Paul’s Wedding – Part 2- Photo Booth

As promised, here are the pictures from the second half of the night. I had a last minute hunch that a regal, Mardi Gras theme would work well for this group of folks. It turns out that peacocks represent endless love and eternal life and their gorgeous lush purple and teal colors go with every skin tone! Hooray for intuition!

Deb and Paul’s Wedding at Green Pastures – Part 1

Deb’s bridesmaid posse/comedienne muses added levity, beauty and fine dance steps at every opportunity.

They found these funny little books at a flea market a few weeks before the wedding.  Advice circa 1913.

For a clue as to the temp that day just check the back of Paul’s A shirt.  Thank Goodness he brought shirt B!

Last minute tweak on the vows. Check out that cinched waist!  Have I mentioned how much I adore this dress?

A quote from Don’ts For Wives:

” Don’t sit and yawn while your husband is smoking his last pipe or finishing his last novel or his game of patience. And don’t mutely reproach him by going to sleep in an armchair. If you are too tired to stay up decently, go to bed, but don’t try to hurry your husband off before he is ready.”

And another:  ”Don’t be too serious and heavy at home. Make things bright for your husband.”

Almost a hundred years old and still…very, good advice!

Amazing Grace, amazing tie.

This dress is pure whipped cream and other delights!

Cake made by the chef at Green Pastures, inspired by this incredible cake artist.

There was such a warm, family feeling in the room as Paul’s college mate read this letter from one of their friends that was unable to attend.

The reader kept getting choked up and raised his fist each time the words would get stuck in his throat.

There wasn’t a dry eye in the house.

Stay tuned for pictures from the Photo Booth coming soon!

Seersucker suits and watermelon smiles

I had the sweet pleasure of hanging out with these two rambunctious brothers last week for the better part of a day.  We had a great time.  I love nothing more than being free to follow littles as they explore and tumble and play and feel and eat.  The eating is always the best!

This is what I have been working on all day, no wonder I’ve been in such a good mood.
