Late summer breakfast with the Light family – part 1

I love it when a family calls me to do a ‘portrait’ session and they really mean ‘a day in the life’ session!

Can you guess what kind of pancakes we ate?

Deb and Paul’s Wedding – Part 2- Photo Booth

As promised, here are the pictures from the second half of the night. I had a last minute hunch that a regal, Mardi Gras theme would work well for this group of folks. It turns out that peacocks represent endless love and eternal life and their gorgeous lush purple and teal colors go with every skin tone! Hooray for intuition!

Deb and Paul’s Wedding at Green Pastures – Part 1

Deb’s bridesmaid posse/comedienne muses added levity, beauty and fine dance steps at every opportunity.

They found these funny little books at a flea market a few weeks before the wedding.  Advice circa 1913.

For a clue as to the temp that day just check the back of Paul’s A shirt.  Thank Goodness he brought shirt B!

Last minute tweak on the vows. Check out that cinched waist!  Have I mentioned how much I adore this dress?

A quote from Don’ts For Wives:

” Don’t sit and yawn while your husband is smoking his last pipe or finishing his last novel or his game of patience. And don’t mutely reproach him by going to sleep in an armchair. If you are too tired to stay up decently, go to bed, but don’t try to hurry your husband off before he is ready.”

And another:  ”Don’t be too serious and heavy at home. Make things bright for your husband.”

Almost a hundred years old and still…very, good advice!

Amazing Grace, amazing tie.

This dress is pure whipped cream and other delights!

Cake made by the chef at Green Pastures, inspired by this incredible cake artist.

There was such a warm, family feeling in the room as Paul’s college mate read this letter from one of their friends that was unable to attend.

The reader kept getting choked up and raised his fist each time the words would get stuck in his throat.

There wasn’t a dry eye in the house.

Stay tuned for pictures from the Photo Booth coming soon!

Seersucker suits and watermelon smiles

I had the sweet pleasure of hanging out with these two rambunctious brothers last week for the better part of a day.  We had a great time.  I love nothing more than being free to follow littles as they explore and tumble and play and feel and eat.  The eating is always the best!

A lump of snuggle….

This is what I have been working on all day, no wonder I’ve been in such a good mood.

Homemade Lunch Boxes 2011

School started a week ago today in Austin.  It’s always a sweet day in our world, and this year it was especially so because my little bird started kindergarden. (sniff, sniff)  See her holding up sign language fingers for  ’K'?  Yup….sigh.   I rallied for the annual task of inventing a unique tote in which each gal could transport  her midday, nutritious sustenance to school. My big girl requested  a shooting star on each bag.  We did purchase new synthetic webbing for the bags because  nothing else makes as reliable of a strap.  Otherwise each bag is made entirely of materials that might be seen by some as trash.  I fused the plastic bags to make them sturdier and longer wearing. Tutorial here - (Hint: I wait until the bags have cooled before peeling them away from the parchment paper-otherwise the ‘fabric’ might stretch and ultimately not lay flay in your finished item.)  I never have a plan when I start these things, which is very freeing.  In each case, I was building the bag around the water bottle and the size of a few reusable plastic containers.  This year’s bags evolved from these: 2010 and 2009.  Happy Crafting!

The Trash Project back by popular demand this weekend August 27 & 28!

Check out these super fun pictures from Forklift Dance Works Studio 54klift Annual Fundraising Bash last May. I am posting them now to give you a sense of what a fun organization Forklift is and to let you know about their latest project that is back by popular demand. The Trash Project is basically a trash truck ballet ‘celebrating Austin’s Solid Waste Service employees’. The show played to sold out audiences in 2009 and is back for two performances this weekend on Saturday the 27th and Sunday the 28th.  There are 2000 seats for each performance, I hope to see you there!

What I’m doing right now…

This is what I am working on today. Possibly my favorite dress I have ever photographed. I mean, if I got married again, to my husband, of course, this Vera Wang dress would be my pick. Just incredible. Spectacular looking bride too. I love my job!

Christia + Clay and their 7.5 guests

This lovely couple chose to get married in an intimate, family  gathering outside of suite #4 at The Hotel St. Cecelia. The party numbered 9.5 as one is in utero. Christia brought both her city and beach wedding dresses since the couple was headed out the following morning for a second wedding ceremony at the Maroma Resort & Spa on the Yucatan Peninsula. Mary Kathryn Paynter of the wonderful Loretta Flower provided the flowers and the ceremony was performed with loving sincerity by the inimitable Judge Jan Breland.  Afterward the family visited and feasted on a meal by  Chris Chism of 2 Dine 4.  Such a graceful way to celebrate one of life’s greatest rituals.

Kittydactyl & Two Clothes Swaps! Date correction.

Our sweet Colorado cousins are also the lucky recipients of these kid specific critter t-shirts.  They were lovingly made completely from upcycled items by yours truly.  I find such pleasure in giving handmade gifts that don’t require a trip to a store.  Two excellent sources of gently used clothing (great for craft projects) are coming up the weekend  of August 27 – 28.   On Saturday the 27th from 9 am to noon, First Baptist of Austin at 901 Trinity is hosting a Clothing Exchange in the basement of the church. This event focuses on helping foster families and asks non foster families to bring items to contribute as well as participating in the swap.

On Sunday Zilker Elementary’s 4th Annual Clothes Swap (organized by Future Craft Collective) begins at 10 and runs til 2.  Bring your recently purged closet items or not.  There is always more than enough to go around.   Zilker’s event offers screen printing and seamstresses so people can begin to customize their finds on the spot.   Hope to see you there, I’ll be hunting for unusual cotton fabrics and a killer pair of leather boots.
